Zapp, a 1980s funk band from Hamilton, OH, gained fame with their electro pop and vocoder styles. Known for hits like "More Bounce to the Ounce" and collaborations with Bootsy Collins. Led by Roger Troutman, their sound was influenced by the Ohio Players and Parliament. Their popular track "I Want to Be Your Man" topped R&B charts, and collaboration with Dr. Dre & 2Pac on "California Love" stood out. Tragedy struck when Roger was killed by his brother, Larry, in 1999.
Morris Day, born in Springfield, Illinois, moved to Minneapolis at age 8. Frontman of the Time, known for the Minneapolis sound, he's had R&B hits like "Fishnet" and albums that topped charts. Collaborated with Prince, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis. Acted in Purple Rain; published memoir in 2019.
Rob Base, born Robert Ginyard in Harlem, hit big with “It Takes Two” alongside DJ E-Z Rock. Known for pioneering hip-house, their track ruled dance floors and climbed Billboard's Top 40. Despite personal and legal challenges, Base released solo work, though none matched their initial success. The duo briefly reunited before E-Z Rock's death in 2014.
Rapper Young MC (Marvin Young), born middle-class, excelled with hits like "Bust a Move" (Grammy winner) & collabs with Tone-Loc. Studied economics at USC & co-founded Delicious Vinyl. Known for humorous, accessible rap.
Formed at Kentucky State University in 1976, Midnight Star excelled in funk, boogie, and electro. Known for hits like "No Parking on the Dance Floor," they signed with Solar Records and achieved Double Platinum status.
